Flag Ship

A black cloud circles.
Man's doom is seen in the sky.
The storms at the ports,
Where trade and commerce soon die,
Ships and flags still floating by.

Loved your opening line, really sets the scene for this dark tanka. The ominous and depressive nature of this piece lingers long after the read is over. I loved it Hilda. Great work

Hi Hilda, This deeply moving Tanka is superbly written. Excellent scene and setting capture in tandem with apt dark portraits. This enduring piece displays compassion and sincerity Howard

Dear hilda what a descriptive and deeply meaningful tanka this is; i love your opening line especially “ a black cloud circles” that sets a very ominous setting. And the rest just flows seamlessly! Profound write! Always a pleasure reading your work. Sending you light always

I enjoy hearing from you. Tankas are so short that I was unable to expand. The sea is usually a good background for a poem.

Chilling picture painted here, Hilda. Do you think that 'free trade' is dead and gone forever? Perhaps so... Or, rather, is your tanka referring to climate change's effect on commerce?... Much to ponder here. Thanks, Gershon

Great question in your reply there. Hard to tell what China, let alone Russia, will do to us...

America is great because it has two oceans. Only Canada has the same. Russia and the Ukraine are fighting over a port. China wants ocean dominance. We will be divided up by all the unrest and we will no longer have an advantage. Will America be partitioned into two countries?
