Five More Minutes
Sometimes I wonder
What’s the point of anything
Five more minutes
Five more minutes of suffocating
Of not being able to breathe
I’m afraid I’m starting to bleed
From this incision that you made on my heart
This nonstop drift
Everything shifts
While you're off to sleep
I sit here, eyes wide
I try practicing my smile
It feels like someone is controlling me
Puppet on a string
Just a doll
That’s made for play
I wish I could stop feeling this way
I used to smile on command
Now it’s just rehearsed
No real feelings
Peeling at the skin on my fingers
That’s when I get my escape
Scrape off this old layer
It’s time for a new one
Coming out of my cocoon
But I’m still so desperately blue
I never knew
That one of these days I’d have a breakthrough
But I don’t see that any time soon
So for now I’ll sit and wonder
And suffocate for five more minutes.
