First Memory
When not yet two, I stood transfixed before a museum’s staged depiction
of a cougar killing a deer. Terror filled her eyes. Blood soaked her coat.
My mother says it took twenty minutes to pull me away from that scene!
in my memory
death clings like a cougar’s teeth
on its victim’s neck
