First July 4th

Grieving is a journey
not a set time frame
Our first holiday without
our son is today, July 4th

He was an adult, so we may
not have spent the day with him
but his absence was felt
as it is felt every day

I think we have learned that
it is possible to feel happiness
and joy while grieving but
the loss is still new and raw

Will it ever not be raw?
It just feels wrong for parents
to lay their 26 year old son
to eternal rest

Holidays are for celebrating
and being thankful and we
are thankful and sad for our loss
It is a bittersweet day

I imagine the hurt never goes away. Although, perhaps, your son is now in a better place...

Thank you, Gershon. I embrace the fact that he is now at peace and not struggling with his mental illness.
