Fire-Flies

Fire-flies sparkle in the late June night
The show they put on is quite a sight
Both old and young do delight
As darkness fills with their display so bright

They bring to life many childhood dreams
The world around you becomes magical it seems
The evening air becomes trickling streams
Of flashing lights with no set routines

It's a favorite game children play
I guess it's always been that way
Get a jar, dash about and sashay
But, not long in one place will a fire-fly stay

When they do capture a treasured one inside
It's shown to everyone with such pride
But after a few moments often decide
The magic to the jar they should not confide

So, off comes the lid so it will go
To join the others in the wonderful show
And as they grow older, I hope they know
To pass on this game, learned long ago

Reading this poem is so much unwinding, and because I rarely see a firefly in our area, this is a very popular game hunting of fireflies and who ever got the brightest jar will win, also there's so much love steaming and caring on this poem. A lovely read of this beautiful poem, Donna. (^_^) Noel.

So many interesting titles you have. I was going to go back and read your easter bunny poem and ran into this one. I just love poems about animals and insects. I remember catching fireflies as a kid. This brought back found memories. Enjoyed your poem. Thank you for sharing.

Sadly fireflies are not found in Idaho. I've always wanted to see one for myself :( Nice poem though! Maybe I'm being overly sentimental, but I find it sad how hopscotch, jump-rope and four-square have all but disappeared. Imagination needs to be passed on, like catching fireflies in a jar. There's no real reason - it's just something you do. Good work!

They really are awesome...like tiny stars....sparkling all around....and yes I played hop scotch with my niece just a couple years ago...until she outgrew it..these traditions are sadly dying...thanks so much for stopping..

What a light hearted poem this is! The first time I saw a fire-fly was such a thrill...since we don't have them in California, I was an adult on a trip back east, and I was as excited as a child when we saw them at twilight!

Nicely done in capturing the fireflies. It brings back wonderful childhood memories. I don't think there are as many fireflies in my area as there use to be. Probably because our countryside home is now a busy town. Have a great weekend and thanks for sharing your delightful poem. Warm Smiles, Connie

This is such a sweet poem, Donna. Beautifully written with some really amazing images (the last two lines of the second verse were my favourite). Anytime I see fireflies, I feel like a kid again - You have captured that feeling perfectly here!

I just LOVED finding fireflies when I was a kid. CAn you believe they do not have them out west?? I don't know why. but when I revisit Iowa once in a blue moon, I always wait to see them at night. Good poem.
