Fireflies

Fireflies rise in the evening, like hundreds of tiny golden lights in the tall grass , flickering
high up into the trees where the cicadas sing,
rejoicing
Who needs the the light of the sun I say as I listen to this wild world serenade me
We're all recovering just the same, finally free from the relentless heat, only I cannot scream
Not as they do
I smile to myself, a silent acceptance of my role in this ritual, praising the coming of night
