Fire


From death exudes the acrid breath of Hell
in burning pyres of rosined timbers' blaze.
Return to me where passion's fires dwell
enchanted by the light of your sweet gaze.

I can't endure through life's infernal pain,
without your love, no, nothing can remain,
so burn my soul to soot in hearths of char
and cast each lonely ash to pits of tar.

I know in truth I'm not the one you need.
Emotions smolder deep in fiery night
to have you here just feels so real and right
but if you leave my heart will surely bleed.

You beast, now burn my bones in flames of coal,
your flames of fire will never touch my soul.

Hi James, An excellent Sonnet James. First thing first, i wish you well in the contest. I really like this entry, well written, you have used your own rhyme scheme, which i like. All in all it is an excellent Sonnet that fits well for the theme but it also stands well alone. As has been said before James, a deep write, an impressive Sonnet. This is a seven....Mike.

Deep, James, and thought-provoking. I come from a culture where the last rites are on a funeral pyre and your " burning pyres of rosined timbers' " is all too real for me' as also "burn my bones in flames of coal". Have seen this happen to dear ones, friends and collegues. The immortality of the soul is a given here. Thank you for bringing out the feelings in such vivid detail. A very well-deserved win. "Return to me where passion's fires dwell enchanted by the light of your sweet gaze." ... very poetic these particular lines! The sparks flew when you wrote this sonnet ... definitely an unusual rhyme scheme: ababccddeffegg ... I've written for the first three elements of Brian's contest ... hopefully I'll be able to think of something for the last one! Good poem, James.

Hi Timothy, I didn't see the other three but as soon as I saw this one it began stirring images in my mind. The rhyme would not be considered standard and in fact it was originally intended to have a efef rhyme in the third stanza with the last two lines reversed but I decided to change it because it "felt" more cohesive as it is now. oh MY, why couldn't I have thought of this? My mind is SO dead on this fire topic. I have to act fast or I will get BURNED (not be able to enter. hahaha,) by the way, hope you entered my faves contest. Can't remember if you did or not.
