Find Your Tribe

She told them what she thought I meant
Interpreting my words every time I spoke
So I stopped speaking

He did not notice my pasted smile
An indication to people with empathy
That I was shutting down completely

I had to annihilate them from my life
I did it swiftly, without explanation
To save my soul

Where are your old friends? My mother asked.
They both came around and spent time with her.
All three whispering about me.

The odd one, the outsider, the strange.
I left home after that, looking for my tribe.
I found them one at a time

In coffee shops, on street corners, under bridges.
It mattered not where I found them
Only that I did.
