April came as my invited guest Delighted once again to see her magnificent gifts But she brought her frost laden bucket Raised it upon the warm air Three nights of chill, frost everywhere Some plants turned black, frozen through Japanese magnolia blossoms died falling down Star magnolia white littered the ground April, April! You silly clown Corn up three inches high dies with a sigh! Tomato plants frozen through We buried them too! Your middle is better than your beginning Spring finally arrived with a warm blow dryer Waved it all around Spring green appeared, inspired People begin to trek outside They are uplifted at the sight of you No longer bundled up 'til they can't move Enjoying some beauty that you bestowed April so fickle please don't switch again Let your inexpugnable attitude remain Warm the earth let her send forth her beauty Touch, caress all the plants, trees and flowers Encourage all of this planet to come alive Renew once again all humankind Remind them of a spirit of love Show them how to be kind
Date: 04/13/2021 Sponsor: Regina McIntosh Contest: April inexpugnable-adj.-stable, fixed I read a lot of poetry. If any part of my work sounds familiar, it is not because I have copied another famous poet on purpose. The opening verse when I got to thinking about it reminded me of Emily Dickinson but I did not do it on purpose so I am giving her credit for the idea in verse one .

Love this poem, Sara. It does echo Dickenson - a great poet worth emulating. Your piece breaths the promise + joy of renewal. Sincere good wishes, Brian

Brian, Thanks for the visit. I was hoping that it would remind people that spring is coming even though at times it seems it is not. Sara

Ah yes , April of such promise, but fickle as you say, still with a sting. A reflection of life itself for all of us. Very beautifully and thoughtfully written.

Loved this Sara... Great imagery... Here it is summer and so hot... Last two stanzas I loved... and last two lines I adore: 'Remind them of a spirit of love, show them how to be kind'... God bless... Hugs... ~ Ani

Anitha, I feel for you in the heat of summer. It is a very difficult season for me even with AC. Your presence here with such a nice comment has made my day. Sara

Ah April. We know how you feel my friend. It's still quite cool here in Alberta. There is a stiff cold wind and we wear our Fall jackets when we go out. Something the wind can't cut through. Well done. God Bless, JB

Judy, I can imagine that Canada would be much colder than here in the south but it is supposed to drop to about 48 tonight with a 57 of last night. It is cloudy and cold this morning but we haven't really had any rain only clouds. It is nice to know a little about your locality. Your insight into my work is always welcomed. Sara

I learn that you read lot of poetry. So you are alert and aware. But I feel ashamed to admit that practically I have no access to English Literature. Firstly my schooling was not based in English Medium. Secondly being a student in Science Stream, hardly got scope to read English Poetry. In retired life I have joined Poetry Soup to fill up my vacuum. Really I am enjoying. Blessing

Anisha, Maybe I should say I have read much poetry but I tend to reread those authors that I enjoy the most and books that I have on hand. Sometimes to relax and ease my mind or get a good laugh brings me to look again at poem or a certain author. Is science your interest the reason you ended up studying it? I appreciate you dropping by. Sara

SS, Yes, April can be changeable which is normal and spring hasn't settled in completely. It has been warm here for several days so I think the possibility of frost or freezing is over but we never know for sure until May comes in. I like the cooler temperatures because I am hot natured. Thanks for dropping by. Sara

Harry, Weather that comes to our state of Georgia actually does come across the ocean from us and effects the weather in the UK. There once was a man who said if a butterfly flaps his wings in one part of the world it will effect some other part of the world so we don't live in isolation.Your comments lift me up this morning. I, too, am all for inexpungable Aprils... A phrase to treasure, Sara. Thoroughly enjoyed, especially as we in Chicago have not (yet?) suffered the indignities of Jack Frost and his callous crew. Here's to Warm Breezes, Gershon

Gershon, I always remember my father-in-law once saying that when he was young in about mid-April one year the temperature dropped down so low that trees' sap froze and they would explode. Something we don't see in the south much but it does happen. Thanks for your visit. Sara

Darlene, There have been so many ways used to try to avoid crops from being destroyed by the frost but it still catches us unawares sometimes. Your presence at my work is always appreciated. Sara

Victor, Yes, it seems not all places have spring but more of constant temperatures or daytime/nighttime constant. We have the four seasons here but not as much change as in the northern part of the USA. Thanks for dropping by. Sara

Them late frosts certainly do some damage Sara, have had a couple here lately and had to put some in the shed at night. Best of luck in the contest. Tom

Tom, Yes, we seem to have trouble where we live on this hillside going down to the creek. I think we get some frost sometimes when others don't. I think maybe we have through it fairly well this year. Some years all the pears and blueberries get killed but I think we might have a crop this year. Thanks for dropping by. I told my husband to wait until the week end after Easter to plant anything but he wanted to get something in the ground. I could have been wrong though and we not have frost. Sara
