Feeder In the Snow

Filled the feeder in the snow
Because, of all the weathers,
This one makes the search for food
Quite tough for those with feathers.

Had to chase some squirrels -
Let them eat the nuts they’ve hoarded -
But then the birds began to come
And wow, was I rewarded!

Chickadees and sparrows,
Blue jays and a mourning dove,
Then a Woody Woodpecker,
A species that I love.

Flocks of little black birds
That prefer to peck the ground,
Crows above on branches
Where good resting spots are found.

Set against the blanket
Of the freshly fallen snow,
I’m happy as I watch the birds
Who know just where to go.

Your poem paints such a pretty picture. I love the imagery. Cardinals are pretty too against "the freshly fallen snow. We are huge bird lovers in our family. My husband especially will love this poem. I cannot wait to share it with him. It's lovely.

Window feeders for birds are verboten in my retirement complex, a pleasure I am denied, but I do enjoy a variety of winter birds in the area. Not long ago I even saw a few diehard robins! This winter crows are plentiful but noisy! / Maurice

You're a smart lady, ilene. Better than a trip to the Conservatorium in Chicago. You really saw a great selection of birds. Bravo, gw

what a delightful poem Ilene, such super imagery - we are lucky here we dont have squirrels so the birds dont have added competition for the food:-) hugs Jan xx
