Notes About The Poem

Feathered Guests

The layer of snow on my deck
is no longer fresh and pristine.
From end to end, even on the chair,
the tracks of the birds can be seen.

They are looking for their meal
which is placed daily in their dish.
A covered deck on this snowy day,
to not have to hunt for food, their wish.

I feed the twelve birds in my home
and I feed the dozens outside.
On a snowy day like this one
my deck is where they choose to hide.

So little birdie footprints cover
the entire surface of the deck.
They and I watch the snowfall
as at their meal they peck.

They are my little feathered guests
and very welcome here.
They'll not go hungry this winter.
Of that, they need not fear.

You and I seem to have lots in common. Private hide-aways, and a love for animals. I love your poems.

Whata sweetheart you are to care for these wee bundles of feathers. I think it must take all their waking hours to find enough to survive when winter comes. Made me feel good reading this.

Ah yes the feathered friends, my mate Rhymer halliwell, Frank an ex canadian 80 plus, feeds ducks n lorikeets, and there is usually a great line up for the honeyed water sweet ....and the multigrain he provides....

Francine, if more people like you lived about two hundred years ago, the Passenger Pigeon might not have gone extinct. Another good write with some appropriate rhyming.

love those birds, I fed some red headed wood peckers suet, this past summer and had to take it down in a couple weeks, was stinking up the neighborhood. I hope they fattened up for the winter, especially the lil' ones. Loved reading your work today.
