Notes About The Poem

Favorite Pastime Haibun

A favorite pastime of mine is to watch wildlife from our front porch or window. Kentucky bluegrass provides a perfect backdrop for deer drinking from the lake, pretending not to watch fawns running in circles, bucking and playing in the fields. Frosty, our horse, grazes right along with the turkey foraging for meals. Cardinals, blue finches and hummingbirds fly from flowers to shrubs to feeders. They, along with the dragonflies, butterflies and bees, seem to follow an invisible orchestra conductor. Lately the ducks, Quack and Quacker, appear to be somewhat intuitive. I also use this God-given opportunity as a mental diversion for physical pain, after seeing specialist after specialist.

Susan, this is a picture perfect poem. Sounds like you have a gorgeous view from your porch. Hoping all is well with you. Nature has a unique way of temporally curing physical pain. Wishing you good health...Congrats on you win! Charlie

Thank you, charles. Hopefully will know more at end of July. Till then, getting by. Yes, nature can do more than I ever dreamed. Take care.

One capital letter, a typo apostrophe in the haiku and I don't think you can have an etc at the end of the prose, but I just quite blatantly loved it, had not been for the discrepancies you'd of been up there on the podium in first place. As is congratulations Susan, on your 3rd place! Thanks for participating, look forward to your continued support, Mick

Thanks, Tom. We give up some luxuries (like high speed internet) but it is well worth it. :)

Enjoyed the journey and the imagery through your window on nature and wildlife. Details you presented paint a beautiful picture..I see why you find it comforting. A well written poem, Susan.
