Father Figures
Sink or swim
You gotta get in
Hot or cold
no lukewarm
Felon or
upstanding citizen
the world is still
a stage
A man has to stand
on his own
no matter his age
Scary knowing
just how crippling
life can get
having the added pressures
of an average education,
no hero readily available
and no father at home.
Stepping out the nest
thinking you're free
diving straight
towards uncertainty
Just remember
it takes strength
to soar without wind
Courage to stand
upright again
Fail or succeed,
my job as a father
is not to impede
A man has to stand
on his own
two feet
The clouds give
a skewed view
You don't see the roots
or the trunk
nor the branch
or the axe mark
from someone taking a swing
All you see is the nest
and what's best
The ground is the foundation
That'll show the rest
So on your way down
remember all the lessons
I attempted to teach
Dust yourself off
and don't be too proud
to use the ladder
I nailed along my tree
A man has to stand on his own;
never think,
you have to do it alone...
