Farewell To An Old Friend
We sit at the old mayanda tavern
And harden with beer the blue of farewell.
The clouds are cold, dark and heavy,
The cold gathers her dew and sits on our pints
We drink and laugh about boyhood.
Sore at heart, we raise our pints no more
But hug and cry.
We sit and say nothing but listen to the sobs of rain gutters
Down unto the grasses that come and go.
Then I say to him
" You left before both of us could understand what death was
Only your uncle knows of your misfortunes.
Soon time and seas will separate us again.
Look, here, nothing has changed
We are still a small mining community living in this oven of mountains,
Yes, we still gossip about one another.
Now that you are living for a place of lights and opportunities,
Where swifts drift early and sing in the morning sun.
My wish for you are better days on this bitter earth.
They say the tide holds all fates,
Should we meet at the crossroads,
I wish to see your daughter you say has your eyes "
