Far Away

FAR AWAY shell necklaces tinkle palms and fingers tell a story awkward hips expound humidity low in Waikiki the eighties so far away our garlands in our grasp with cherub smiles holding unwrinkled hands in an exotic land we call our home little ones shall forget the sound of the sea my sailor cap boogie boards slapping the waves warm sand beneath their toes we keep in touch with sentimental stories navy brats really don’t understand pearl harbor after the war my mind wanders seeing a minute engraving ~ picturing a bomb and 1941 life goes on and on meeting up with us ~~ passing us by 7/10/2017

A super poem with a nice easy flow, invoking memories of long ago and yet not that long ago. I am sure I could hear the waves whilst reading your poem. Kind regards, Kevin x

Hi Kim , thats a really well written and well structured poem, it might be better however, to never end off a poem on a sad note, but with hope or a silver lining.

Literally there is the smallest engraving in a tile on the floor on Ford Island.

Thank you, Mark. It is not meant to show so much sadness but the passing of time...before, then, and now...almost wave-like.

Just think, a couple more generations and WW II will be a footnote in the history books. So sad:( A mix of the happy and sad here, Mrs Kim. The islands are a magical place. Wonderful poem:) Good luck!

This is wonderful Kim, a reflection of how the past and the present intermingle, but some things cannot be forgotten, no matter how serene they may seem. I love this one! A poignancy, yet subtle. :)

Funny how the past becomes obscure when the future beckons. At least for some it seems. I like this though, the island and the history...it will always be there for whoever wants to peruse it.
