Fancy Takes Flight

Will I be there in the rocket
The day that they set off for Mars,
Drinking champagne in abundance
And toasting the myriad stars?
Shall I meet octopoid creatures
Of extraterrestrial birth,
Eager to make my acquaintance
And hear all the latest from earth?
Eyes lose their glaze and refocus
As talk of invasion unfurls;
Lost in a mere flight of fancy;
Engrossed in ‘The War of the Worlds!’ *
