Facing the Bullies

You know how some people can do and say mean stuff and their faces stay okay? How they can say something horrible to another person and not turn pink or red or something? Have they no moral fiber? No sense of decency? No regret? No embarrassment? How can they hurt people without realizing it? How can their face stay okay after they have completely demoralized someone or put them down or taken away a piece of their soul? How can they do this without hurting their own heart? How can they leave people devastated? Were they born this way or did life do this to them? I stare after these anomalies in disbelief not understanding. How do they not know the effect their mean ways has on others? Where are their feelings? Where is their empathy? Where is their compassion? What has happened in their life to make them this way? How can we help?

I know just what you are describing here... I actually wrote a poem about it once called "Empty Shells", asking "What terrible/ emotional apocalypse/ befell them?" It is hard to understand how anyone could lose their empathy and humanity- degenerating to that level of meanness.
