Eyes

eyes are the window to the soul
and yours you tried to veil
I could see inside of you
where deeply your ghosts dwell
but the threat didn't make me run

you wanted to be something
and you feigned it pretty well
you thought that you were someone
that you've never really been
you are the only one who is fooled
and the one heart that you control

I didn't fall for partial truth
or obscurity in your song
although I danced to your music
I could see the realities
the demons that you fight
the shadow that you blame resides

it is like a 12-step program
it is there when you are ready
prayers and candles won't completely free
I am not naive and would rather see
then on the other where secrets hide

I'm not saying it doesn't hurt
loving you wasn't part of my plan
you were honest in your verity
and that you didn't love me
that I give to you
though it doesn't ease this pain
it wasn't easy loving you
