Extending the Branch
Wrapped up in the olive leaf quilt
traipsing new ground on feet of persuasion
with your silhouette on my mind.
The wince of your eyes at the bite in my words
and arched resignation on it's way down your spine
settling into it's new home.
We free this house every Sunday
by opening the paint stuck windows
and leaning way, way out.
It's a long way down
because we both insisted
on building higher and higher.
Reach the trees!
Reach the clouds!
Reach the sun!
Perhaps any relationship built so high
would sway in the wind at times.
Now, you're on the move again,
gripping steering wheels too tight,
clenching your jaw with no one to see
how handsome you really are.
It's these images which chill me absolute
until I close the windows on your resignation
and rehearse my apology speech,
warming independent in my quilt,
tattered from far too much use.
