Evergreen

My leaves never droop and my flowers stand high I bloom through the year as the seasons pass by I witness the daffodils stand proud and tall I see warmer weather put paid to them all The alliums follow, the marigolds too Then plants that will flower the whole summer through Impressive by some standards, you might agree But none of these plants hold a candle to me The roses come close as they bloom into fall And still here I stand as I scrutinise all I watch as the wind brings down apples and pears I won’t drop my leaves but I see them drop theirs For I was put here by a man with a spade Because it gets hot and there isn’t much shade And all year I brighten this spot where I’m placed I’m plastic - and there’s no accounting for taste

Thank you, Ilene. Not been on Soup a lot lately… Somehow the days seems shorter right now, but I’m also tied up with a poem that has become a challenge to actually finish before it becomes longer than ‘War And Peace’. So glad the twist at the end of ‘Evergreen’ caught you out as that means it wasn’t too predictable. Terry

Dear Terry, I loved how you cleverly played with the notion of permanence and endurance. Through the perspective of an artificial plant, you humorously explore the changing seasons and the fleeting beauty of natural flora. The irony of your unchanging plastic existence amidst the cycle of growth and decay adds a delightful twist. I also love how your poem invites reflection on the value we place on authenticity and the unexpected beauty of the unconventional. - Blessings, Daniel

Thanks, Daniel. I’m astounded that you found so much of note in this little write. I generally look for the ‘gag’ rather than the tear and I do try to ensure that my tales make sense (even if they are deliberate nonsense or whimsy), but I rarely look too far beneath the surface of my words, so I’m both chuffed and flattered by your analysis. Thanks, Deb. Made a number of edits in my attempts to keep the twist ‘secret’. Glad you enjoyed this. Terry

a beautifully written personification. I love what the evergreen says about the flower garden, the withering roses, and the flowers that bloom all through summer. But the ending was just brilliant...plastic! You're awesome. Am faving this one, wishing you best wishes for the contest.

Thanks, Sara. This was written for the contest but alas, the contest has a twelve line limit and I couldn’t see a stanza that I could easily lose. Thanks for the fave. Terry
