Even Slugs Need Hugs - Nursery Rhyme

It seems I was stuffed with some wool and some foam
And then I was sent to this ‘in between’ home
My purpose is now to give heartstrings a tug
Alas that’s not easy… because I’m a slug

I feel like I’ve been here forever and ever
For I don’t recall being sewn together
I didn’t get long to hang out with the boys
For this is a shop that sells soft cuddly toys

When I first got here I wasn’t alone
With bunnies and bears and a dog with a bone
There was a cat and that thing from Loch Ness
And there was a rag doll whose hair was a mess

Whoever came up with a cuddly slug
Why not a butterfly or lady bug
Just as expected, my friends sold out fast
I’ll give you one guess who was left here till last

Of course that was me sitting here by myself
Until someone came… and they refilled the shelf
But one by one all those new friends went as well
Even the tortoise… hey… I need a shell

I need to be loved as it’s good for one’s health
But shells don’t come cheap and I’m lacking in wealth
A young girl approaches; I’m likely to fail
“Mum,” she says, “I want the poor homeless snail.”

this is charming, terry! the end reminds me of the children's book "corduroy," about a teddy bear no one will buy because he's missing a button on his pants, until a little girl begs her mom to buy him and then sews a new button on. i prefer your story, though, because the rhyme is wonderful!

Thanks, Ilene. It seems whenever anyone references a written work, I’ve rarely come across it. Not familiar with ‘Corduroy’ but I think you’ve given me the bones of it. Note to self… Read more! Like you, I love finding rhymes to fit the story rather than trying to make the story fit the rhyme. Glad you enjoyed. Terry

Getting picked, to no avail If you still leave a stuffed slug trail. Enjoyed of course, Terry!

Thank you, Heidi. I’ve never seen a cuddly slug. Maybe I should get onto the patents office ;-)

Maybe not a best seller but sold to a soul of compassion, someone unique! Enjoyed!

Some can see beauty where others can't. Quite a happy ending for Sammy the snail. Good luck in the contest Terry. Tom

Will I ever be able to use slug pellets again? You betcha! As soon as I find one chewed marigold, old Slippy’s done for. Ha ha. Thanks, Tom.

Superb tale from the slug's point of view. I think Eve will love this, Terry, and I wish you the best of luck in her contest.

Had to think awhile to come up with a character, but as soon as I had ‘slug’ I was in business. Glad you enjoyed, Milt. Terry
