Eternity

Trauma is a book read many times, but the ending still haunts
Survival is like a breath unearned
Like knowing the ending of tomorrow, without the knowledge of how to fix it

And all of this combined becomes a curse forced upon a black person
Like a forged contract signed by the oppressors

... And yet despite centuries of pain
Of jealousy trying to consume us
Of a lifetime of envious stalkers
We bring the sun that turns night from day
Where strength is a promise written into our dna
Where a world full of hate smiles in our face
A reminder we belong in this space
A reminder that this world is ours -
That it was never theirs to take

We are the wishes whispered at night
Where desperation and hope shadow -
In the eyes of the oppressors
Begging to become us
To be infinite, to be eternal
To have everything we offer
To have the life we worked for
To simply exist and exude greatness
To have our blackness, without the colour

Despite our bodies a battleground of invisible scars
Where differences define our treatment
We are still the light in the darkness

Even with our trials and tribulations
Our spirits guided by our ancestors
It becomes unbreakable -
Like a promise written in the stars
