Notes About The Poem

Eternally

I thought I'd found love, but I was wrong.
We met, and you wrote me a love song.

You were kind and sweet. I tried not to care,
You saw my need and you were always there.

There came the day you held out your hand.
I wasn't sure why. I was afraid to misunderstand.

You wanted more than a relationship as a friend.
My emotions were fragile, still on the mend.

But you asked for nothing; nothing at all
Except to be my strength and break my fall.

You listened to me and calmed my fears,
Soothed my restless soul and dried my tears.

Still you asked for nothing, nothing at all
Except to be my confidant when I called.

The song you wrote was called, 'Eternally.'
From the title I knew what you meant to me.

My eyes opened to see the love in yours
I stopped asking the whys and wherefores.

I allowed myself to make a new start
Because you asked for nothing ~
               I gave you my heart.
