Erosion

We met in the undertow —
someplace between longing
and forgetting —
and I mistook your waves
for something holy.
I thought I could breathe
underwater
if I loved you enough.
I thought drowning
would feel like destiny
if the water looked like you.

But oceans don’t hold
what they take.
They keep it.
They keep everything.
