Entanglements

He tramped upon the wooded way,
By which direction he couldn’t say.
For now it seemed that he was lost,
So he sought a bed at any cost.

Then in the clearing he saw a spire,
That rose above the trees and higher.
He approached the tower at its center,
But he found no doors by which to enter.

“How can this be?” He said in wonder,
“There was never a place I couldn’t plunder.”
Then looking up he saw a portal,
Which framed a face of beauty immortal.

His heart cried out to his head,
To blot out words of sense it said.
He was determined to work a plan,
To climb the wall and take her hand.

By the vines that grew he sought to scale,
And then her love he would assail.
But the closer he got the more he tangled,
Until at the sill he was hung and dangled.

He cried out to her to aid his need,
And yet she never paid him heed.
That’s when he found there lost in the vines,
The remnants of others who’d lost their minds.

She remained cloistered inside her bower,
He never gained entrance to her tower.
From her he never received a sign,
So there he withered on the vine.

To be left to cry can be worse than the stillness,
And sometimes the cure is worse than the illness.
The lesson that’s here for you to learn,
In love never take a careless turn.
