End of the World

END OF THE WORLD

Took a midnight plane to Central Asia .
Man it was far away and empty-black
took off and the bright lights of Germany
showed us the way. Over Poland
they were less common, over Russia
they faded rapidly in blackness thick
for most of the way. Now oceans they are black
for no one’s there. But here were folks
below but lightless. It was darkness time.
Longest trip I ever wondered about.
Each dim spot was a town but isolated -
each from the rest of earth it seemed. Each was
the end of the world for its people, no point
in travelling on the road out of town -
nothing else was out there. Never felt
so lonely in my life inside that plane.
