Empty Streets

Based upon a real dream I had after 911.
Empty streets, I dreamt about them;
and a payphone - did it ring?
Could it be stranger things
repurposed in the preponderant dark?
After 2000 was the hustle and bustle
of mortar and dust; were there butterflies?
I dreamt this dream after that,
but presently the streets are clear
except for pigeons and the law.
No pretzel carts. Broadway busted.
But the phone, did it ring;
what does it mean?
I was alone. I don’t think payphones
existed on the payroll anymore.
There’s a phone in a glass box.
I want to know what it means.
I thought I knew
but it seems
there may be more:
more empty streets;
more to my dream.
