You don't WANT to ... ever
you don't want to let go
but you DO ...
you have to, for their sake
spread your hands and let the butterfly free
watch it press gossamer wings to the breeze, (praying)
your heart, your joy, your beautiful baby
let loose to life
and lessons ...
precious parts of your soul and self
gone to a wide world
while your hands ache for their tickle
ears yearning their laughter
your being breaks for the sake of a precious path not your own
and the dreams you once kissed goodnight
sound and safe
and sleepy ...
oh, for those greatest gifts
the little arms about your neck, trusting
and the knowledge that your wee ones are asleep their beds
yet ...
each time you look in the mirror
every time you chance to see your face reflected
you know they're not gone - not EVER gone
for the tender, laughing light ...
in your eye.
