Emotional Clutter
So many of my friends have come and gone
like shadows consumed by the dark of night;
and my heart misses their extinguished light.
For once, each one shone as bright as the dawn;
they stayed awhile; then, the curtain was drawn,
and stepping offstage, they slipped out of sight.
Like actors auditioning for a role;
each flame flared, yet soon began to sputter,
play acting became their bread and butter.
And yet, their warmth still lingers in my soul;
tethered to forever feelings, time stole,
and reduced to emotional clutter.
From failed friendships; I've managed to save
treasured memories I'll take to my grave.
