Elizabeth the Unmatched
Beautiful Elizabeth endowed with charm and talent,
dominated the silver screen for decade after decade.
We watched her grow from childhood to a fascinating woman.
To see that face on celluloid was worth the money paid.
We aged along with our sweet Liz, shared her triumphs and her pain,
the nearest match to royalty whom America can know.
Her private life was not her own, we stalked her ceaselessly.
The paparazzi followed closely, wherever she would go.
We forgave her human foibles that we would condemn in others.
Her beauty gave her privileges denied to common folk.
Although her many marriages were fodder for the comic,
fans praying for her happiness did not enjoy the joke.
She defended the unpopular and was far before her time,
in accepting the unacceptable and working for control
of a despised disease that others feared and in cowardice turned away.
Elizabeth bravely took it on as another real life role.
She was loyal to her friends even when they weren't their best,
caring not a whit of harsh words that others had to say.
She was mistress of her destiny and her life was a success
that does not come to many as we travel on our way.
Though we would keep her always, our dear Liz of Wonderland,
she could not live by will alone and in frail health, couldn’t stay.
There will not be another like her to ever loving fans.
On the screen she’s ours forever and will never go away.
