Notes About The Poem

Elizabeth Siddal's Last Pose

Painting: 'Ophelia'
Artist: John Everett Millais

John Millais, today I pose, frozen, just for you -
a blank canvas, your lonely, soul-saddened muse.
Love me with the iridescence of your inspiration.

I am whoever they want me to be -
Beata Beatrix to Dante Rossetti.
But to you I am Ophelia, and we are alone.

Allurement to your compulsion to create and paint,
ever patient, never late, though this ice-shimmery water
slices my nicety, has me tingling hypothermic-faint.

I breathe sleepy, big-bloomed poppies;
purple panicles glitter in my lungs like starburst pinnacles.
Water-mirror reflects back crystalline light, fern-feathered pool.

The flame-copper fronds of my hair
unfurl in your fantasy; my beauty bends like a willow
to softly kiss your canvas, your brush caresses my curves.

I hope your fame remembers my reality
and how my vision camera-caught your creativity.
On glacial, arctic wastes of my wasted mind, blanked by laudanum,

whitened by nauseous opium, colour-clouds burst,
water lilies open starry pink hands in a pool of jewels.
This cold clutch is finally unclenching.

My stillborn child, that crib-cooled one,
light-cradled, thaws the bone-biting chill,
reclaims me from this dream-drowned prismatic pool.

I hope your fame remembers my reality... I love that line... You have the most poetic command of the English language... I love how your poem flows and your interpretation of the painting... You do alliteration and assonance so well... A brilliant poem for the contest.. Congratulations on your first place..

Speechless. Seriously. Poetics of emotional depth and intelligence so profound and powerful I cannot critique, but only read and bow.

Charlotte, your words capture this moment of turmoil etched on the lady's face in a moment of torment and decision - whether sink beneath the "pool of jewels" or be reclaimed. Is it a death knell prayer or cry for life. Your poems always beg to be read and re-read - to be absorbed. So happy I found this today. Sending you bright summer blessings!

Such wonderful intricate depth to the painting and your words. Hamlet’s Ophelia and Elizabeth Siddal the model (“ I am whoever they want me to be”) could be both best described as tragic heroines. I sense too, having read your past works, that there are echoes of yourself here Charlotte. So many layers and great blending of themes explored. “ I hope your fame remembers my reality” - My favourite line. Cheers - Gary
