Edelweiss

Won't say anything to the police. Let this count as an accident. No one needs to know. For months we prepared the ascent. We knew the difficulties and dangers. But, you know, it's something that's worth it. Look at the valley that spreads out below. The clouds like balls of yarn advancing in the sky. The stars so close. And we got to the top. We feel the joy of reaching the top. And then the overwhelming silence. The feeling that there's nothing more to be done. Maybe it was too much for her. This catharsis. This moment. I think her eyes said it all. All the darkness in the world lived in them. She said goodbye with a caress on my face. And a shy smile before jumping into the immensity. Now my tears are freezing. On the way down I will pick a flowering edelweiss seedling. I hope I can take good care of it.
