Echo of a Promise

You stayed because of a promise
Just a few simple words
I promise I’ll be better
I promise I’ll change
I promise things will never be the same

In a good way, you hoped
But boy, were you wrong
That promise was nothing but a siren song

They say they will try
They say theyll do better
You tell yourself this is where it ends

But when it happens again
You let it slide
Because what you tell yourself?
That was the lie

This free-verse poem captures the painful cycle of broken promises with stark clarity. The repeated “I promise” lines create a persuasive, almost hypnotic rhythm that mirrors the speaker’s hope, while “siren song” sharply reveals its danger. The conversational questions and clipped ending make the betrayal feel intimate, immediate, and deeply unsettling.
