Dusty Diamond
Oh how a "Hurrah" can help heal
even the most ached soul
when up from our folded seats we bolt
like lightening in reverse
to applaud out team
and the American Dream
Although the outcome is yet unknown
somehow... here, we're all
sewn together
a tapestry of humanity
Communal joy in the company of strangers
even opponents
Bonded by respect and appreciation for the game
Such a seemingly simple sphere
its dirt-stained whiteness
held, thrown, caught, gripped to smoothness
The shooting star of the show
When it meets the bat
a satisfying crack
How confused must be
this small, round airborne hero
One moment speeding... spinning one direction
Then swiftly back toward where
it came from. A round trip
This famous flyer
gracefully accepts being struck so strongly
repeatedly
It's worth it
to be able to fly
so far
so high
How free it must feel
as we, too, should never forget
our freedom
or its price
The dusty diamond here
doesn't the same way
glisten
But crowds sure listen
to the call of the referee
Safe!
"Hurrah" and again "hurrah"
and for a few moments,
maybe even an evening
or a whole sunny afternoon,
we all feel safe
no matter what life pulls and pushes us to do
at the end, after the last call, the final score
the sounds of the crowd gradually quieting
When we leave this beautiful game.
