Drunks and Skunks

Why do we say someone is “drunk as a skunk?”
In truth, has anyone ever seen a skunk drunk?

Milton I looked it up, the phrase Drunk as A Skunk and it has been around since 1920. I gues it really has no meaning it just rhymes and that is why it is used.

Thanks, Michael. I thought maybe it came about during Prohibition, but apparently it dates from the Roarin' Twenties. I think you're right...probably because it rhymes, but I bet no one has ever seen a "drunk skunk!"

Have you ever seen a skunk waddle? They move side to side as if they cannot see, and they are ready to fall back and forth as they do it.

You are so right, Caren. They have the strangest walk, and I get the idea that they don't have very good eyesight. Don't know about this for sure.

Frankly, I think most skunks have more sense than to get that drunk! Apparently, drunks do not have!

No, I haven't, but I've smelled a few, literally and figuratively.
