Drugstore Jesus

he fills the bottles slowly
no need for miracles
prescription drugs
save the soul

wash away the sins
with a glass of water
take two and call me
tomorrow

the pain of the world
written on paper
prayers answered
little purple pills

the people’s god
rattle in plastic containers

they stand in line
waiting their turn
giving their money
to drugstore jesus
