Drinker's Lament

I drink when the sun's too bright
It cuts down upon the glare
I drink when it's cold and dark
It helps me through the scare

I drink when I'm melancholy,
I drink when i am sad,
I drink when i am happy,
When I'm joyous, or when I'm mad

I drink so time will pass me by
Without the pain of thought
I drink so time can slow down,
So I can savor what I ought

I drink when skies are cloudy,
I drink when skies are blue,
I drink when thoughts come upon me,
Of days of me and you

I drink when my ship is sailing,
Or when my ship is sunk,
I drink till the seas cover me,
Until I'm mercifully drunk

I drink in memory of my dad,
My buddy, my strength in all I've tried
I drink in sad remembrance,
Of the night my daddy died

There are those who surely say,
What they know is true, they think,
They say that I am foolish,
I ought not succumb to drink

I don't beat my chest in protest,
I don't cry that it's my right...
I merely turn away so slowly,
And drink on through the night...

Though I may be the ultimate fool,
And this I would not deny,
I hope someone understands me,
That I'd rather drink than cry.
