Driftwood

DRIFTWOOD

Once an unknown green bough in some
South Seas tropical forest -
Vigorous growth, fruit producing,
Giving shade and shelter to young lovers,

Broken by rocks and waves
Stripped of bark and sap
Salted till the life is gone
Soaked till near sinking

Travelled half across the world
Abandoned on beach at low tide
Formless, shapeless, valueless
Broken old branch from long-ago tree

Picked up and collected for firewood
By an unknown old man
