Dreaming Sea

Yesterday I dreamt of you
I dreamt of you the way water dreams of its own depth
without edges, without the ceremony of names
we kept on merging into one another
I was you. You were me.
The border dissolved the way fog leaves a mirror
slowly, and then all at once.

The same way I was in you, and you in me,
falling through a shared and dreaming sea.
The water was dark. Not the dark of absence
the dark of too much presence,
the way the deep ocean is black not from emptiness
but from the weight of everything above it

even when that face is yours,
even when that face is mine,
wavering, merging, crossing the borderline.
I woke not knowing where the dream had ended.
That seems right.
Some crossings are not meant to be undone.
Some waters, once you've entered them together,
stay inside you
dark, full, and still swimming.

In the darkest part of the water, I see you still
