Dragons- For Contest

The thunder reached them well before
it's shadow flashed along the shore
as whirlwinds from the steady beat
knocked fleeing hordes from off their feet.
Thousands sprinted to the surf
except a few who had the nerve
and put up spirited defence
and fell in flares of heat intense.
Fast and low, wings whipped the waves
glistening scales of charcoal, Jade.
Skimming clifftops, banking right,
climbing until out of sight,
then corkscrew dive in view it hove
and settled in a quiet cove.
On rocky crag where beast had fetched
it gazed down on her wings outstretched,
mother of pearl breast warmed by sun
she looked up at the one who'd come.
Crimson eyes met gaze of blue,
"Vanilla's sold out- will chocolate do?"

Thanks Pandita, isn't it nice when sometimes a poem just falls into place with little effort? Enjoyed writing it, glad you liked it, too. Viv x

Didn't see the ending coming - I love it when that happens and I'm sure it was your intent. This is well done, many worthy elements and should do extremely well in the contest ... CayCay

I like a twist, CayCay. This poem sort of reminds me of the old joke about a crab who went to buy his wife ice cream, but they were melting so he kept licking them. When he returned with nothing left and said he'd had to eat them, she said, " You know your trouble? You're just shellfish" Viv x

Viv, I really do enjoy your delightful writes; Mr Whippy as we know him. Told the kids when he plays the music, he's run out of ice cream... but kids talk at school don't they - Lindsay

I can't believe you'd have such a cruel streak, Lindsay, but I must admit it's cost effective. Thanks for dropping by- hope you're well. Regards, Viv
