Urban Sonnet
Invented by: Laura Loo Urbaniak. Sonnet form, with ten syllables per line and a rhyme scheme of ABABBB- CDCDDD- EFEFFF-GG
Once long ago, in a faraway land
people lived amongst dragons and fairies.
And some folks claimed to have seen them firsthand
while out picking mushrooms or blueberries,
we were friends back then, not adversaries
and were considered contemporaries.
It seems that fairies and dragons were kin,
should you spot one, the other is nearby.
They loved the soft sounds of a mandolin
and somehow magically learned to fly,
often zipping across the open sky
quick as you please, in the wink of an eye.
But jealous villagers hunted them down,
and many dragons and fairies were slain.
Where the forest once grew, they built a town
and then sowed open meadows with their grain.
Both dragons and fairies feared man's disdain,
vowing never to trust humans again.
Mere figments of our imagination,
or were they once part of God's creation?
