Downwind
How you smelt that first, my friend,
I will never know
I am surely hungrier than you
My nose is keener than yours
My brain was always sharper
Perhaps you saw the drool drip from
the corner of my mouth?
Or did you hear my nostrils flair?
Downwind.
Hackles raised. Target in sight.
The advantage was ours
And the prize a good one -
enough there to fill our 30 bellies
We all won
As is right and fair -
But the victory was yours
You spoke first
You took command
I'll eat,
we all will
But I'm not sure I'll sleep so well tonight
Something is lost for good
As the spear fails, so does the heart
