Dope

Some people give up
thinking there's nothing they can do
to change the world and what happens
  to me and to you.

But if they could find hope
  they might give up dope
  and all the things
  that get them through.

Tomorrow they'll work another long day
  for only a little pay,
just enough for food and rent,
for lights and water and on clothes spent.

They know some people beg and cry
to their God in the sky,
hopeful He sees their grief and tears,
and praying He'll ease their fears.

Some are even dead
thanks to the "Big" thieves in soft beds.
Their jobs were sold to the LOWEST bidder,
  consequences they did not consider.

The same old story unfolds.
The rich are warm.
The poor are cold.
The kids are hungry and grandmother is old.

And the baby cries as mama prays
to the Man in the skies.
Someday things will change.
That's what we hope.

Until then...pass the dope.

I think this is an exceptional write. If hope is a candle what happens when the candle melts?
