Dog Love

He leans heavily against me
when we stop
sides heaving
panting
leaning into my leg
yes
I touch his head and silky ears
I watch them turning
as he looks over the yard
that mama bird
always scolding him now
branch to branch she follows
him
around the yard
and he tries to get her
midair
they watch each other
she has babies to feed
and he wants to chase her
He looks up to me
and I see his soul
and I'm thankful
nothing better than dog love.
