Tee hee ;), no, not real dogs. Going for the metaphors. My dog however, has never ever displayed her hackles (!) unlike my last girl, who was very dominant and flashed her hackles and teeth accordingly. xomo!

A well crafted haiku. As the keeper (one is never really owner) of a mostly black Shepard cross, I know of what you speak. Sam addresses the problem by full body immersion in whatever water of mud puddle is available.
