Do you remember?

Do you remember the last day of August, over two years ago?
There were chances of rain and the sky was so grey
so you wore my coat while I wore all of your shame.
I don’t know if you noted my utter disdain
when you walked me to the bus stop and filled me with pain
A simple admission you’d thought was so harmless
but this was my first ride, with not even a harness.
When we parted ways, was it even a hug?
Or was that a problem, was that too much?
That sentence you’d spoke, I’d hoped was a joke as I felt the water bathing my eyes
Had I got this wrong, all along?
Had I really not seen past the disguise
of someone so gentle, so interested and pure
who I’d thought could finally start to cure
the illness inside of me, I was so sure that my sentence was up, I’d arrived at your shore.
That wasn’t even the worst of your crimes
I remember so vividly when the clock had struck nine
you had just pictured me in your bedroom light
thought you’d share with me your five second delight
A couple days passed, with you on my mind
but this time I had pictured a different kind
A man so broken, who was swimming away
from the truth that he feared, begging him to stay.
I was told that I was the last
you were closing the door on your house made of glass
but that didn’t end up being the case
I’ve seen his account, I’ve seen his face
It’s clear that to you, I was one to replace.
As much as I hate the way that you made me choke
with every word, a part of me broke
it’s not been the same, it feels like a game
to me, none of it was a joke.
If I were to pass you by, on those old streets under new skies,
would you recognise me, would you even try
to heal all my gashes, to soften my sighs
or would you pretend that you were glad of its end;
you escaped me and the danger I held.
