Divisive Times

I choose to trust my eyes,
When told to believe an alternate truth.
It should come as no surprise
My faith in our government hangs by the skin of its tooth.

When a country has no rule of law
That equally applies to every man,
It has already begun its downfall
I hope you understand.

My political stance is now personal;
I cannot deny that fact.
I have always gotten emotional
When innocent people are under attack.

I have always stood up to the bully;
Sometimes giving, sometimes getting the bloody nose.
Deep down inside of me truly
I know, sometimes, that is how it goes.

You can love me or you can hate me,
Given the emotions I wear on my sleeve;
Or, if you care instead to debate me,
My convictions I am sure you will see.

We do not have to agree on everything;
Or, really on nothing at all;
I’m just getting tired of currently living
In the most divisive time I can recall.

Really cool how this Quatrain weaves personal feelings with bigger issues, makes the political pain hit close to home without losing that honest, raw vibe. Joe, I liked the “bloody nose” line because sometimes that end is necessary when we do what it right!
