Distant Shores
In the distance they faded
the sounds
soft stony drum rolls
surging surf roiling
gulls shrieking
above the fear
dreams of distant shores
promises
of freedom
a better life
enticed them
realities regimen
dictated – flee
escape, protect
the dreams
that challenge
the will
to do
dark seas and darker skies
survival’s test
of heart
of self
of god
to creep
through roiling surf
voices hidden
in stony drum rolls
praising
whatever is left
to believe in
huddled
in anguished thought
of distant shores
