"Dissolution"
I go to sleep a lot now,
to escape reality.
It is as if I am no longer here,
but there in the other worlds.
Some dreams are so real.
Once was a life
where as a child
we walked barefoot
through molasses
dirt roads gone country
wide open spaces
watched the burning
fields of sugar
the sweetest fragrance
the air tasted
like candy apples
through the smoky haze
of night we watched
God throwing us stars
Orion with his shield
protected us
under canopy of
blue gums shading
we feasted on the sweetness
of almond and lemon icing
the coconut cake waited
for us to undress it
with our smiles
our days were spent
deliciously idle
basking in the warmth
from Apollo's golden idol
the Sun, a shining badge
we wore without
the notion of
wearing out our years
in 50+ we watched time
go slowly in it's turning dial
pinned to sky of turquoise sea
as above so below
it was as if we
were in heaven
for eternity
while we picked apart
all the threaded blankets of rainbow
waving wild flowers crochetted between
black and white holsteins
watching kindles suck
on the sweet warm white milk
the legion of pale toffee jersey
we woke up very early
heralded in the dusky dawn
leaving wet tracks for us
like magic snails
we were to follow
unafraid of holy ghosts
we hunted for elusive goose eggs
hidden in the ever welcoming hollows
of long silver grass
and tangerine rusted relics
treasure chests we opened
we made necklaces of
shedded diamonds, snakeskins
hanging like the finest silk from
grossmutter’s ceiling beams
emerald tree frogs
sang us to sleep
while the summer rain
hit the tin roof like an
orchestra of tinkling triangles
we live in glass cages now
afraid to breathe in each other’s dreams
kisses are snuffed out like flames
before we are permitted Orwellian
to go back to sleep
closed and sterile
like old black and white photos
in a picture framed
our gossamer wings pinned
bones brittle lacking vitamin D
caught, we are specimens
between borders locked in
finished in flight before we begin
there is no such thing as an embrace
or a warm handshake
afraid to reach out
we turn and face our corners
like disobedient children
told to be quiet
there is peace
when there is no revolution
our dreams are made of better things
I go to sleep a lot now
to escape reality.
It is as if I am no longer here
but there in the other worlds.
Some dreams are so real.
