Didn'T Mean To

I have been stung deep and hard
by other guys when I let down my guard
I thought i'd give you a chance
but just like the wind blows
so did our romance
It blew out like a candle
So quickly I was stunned
and all I could think of
was to get up and run

The way I handled it
was really immature i'll admit
But a part of me felt like
now it's my chance to get in a hit
I wasn't in love
and I didn't want to string you along
Letting you think there was hope
would have left you worse off

I'd rather be honest with myself
I told you it was over
and that the feelings I'd had before
had disappeared like I was suddenly sober
Actually saying goodbye never felt so freeing
I feel like saying no has brought new clarity
I never meant to hurt you
I never meant to hurt your pride
But a part of me knew that it was time
I said goodbye.
